What we do

Making a difference

We have done some collaborative work with the Ministry of Education and Social Welfare and several non-governmental organisations in Sierra Leone.

  • Our young women are taught safe and useful practices (female hygiene and sex education).

  • Our field workers are available on the phone and for face to face, meetings to support and counsel the young women whenever the need arises.

  • Our Saturday psycho-social meetings continue to provide extra classes in numeracy and literacy for the girls and mentoring sessions. Lunch is served at the end of the sessions and financial help with transportation is provided for the girls who need it.

  • We engage the girls in structured activities such as educational games, quizzes, arts and crafts, drama and dance classes during the school holidays to keep them occupied.

  • Our young people were asked to perform at the annual celebration of “The Day of The Girl Child”.

  • We organise talks and provide leaflets on safeguarding prepubertal children and awareness about grooming and its role in teenage pregnancy and underage sex.

  • We continue to hold discussions on the issues around sexual and reproductive health, FGM, child marriage and other problems that are entrenched in the customs and traditions of our people.

What makes us different?

  • A residential retreat within an integrated setting.

  • Holistic and intense support from matrons and resident counsellors.

  • The learning centre and nursery on-site offer the young mothers the opportunity to further their education with the assurance of their babies are being cared for in a safe and supportive environment.

  • Extracurricular activities such as dancing and drama may uncover hidden talents that could potentially become a livelihood. The girls will go out to become agents for change in their communities, using drama and dance to educate and inform other young people about teenage pregnancy and its effect on young women.

  • Performing arts will help build their confidence and self-esteem.

  • The sanctuary will provide a stimulating, nurturing, and homely environment that will help young people overcome their personal challenges and thrive.
